In reference to multitasking, I find my self watching TV and at the same time playing on my iPad. It's like my mind has to always be busy, when I'm cooking I will watch NetFlix on my iPad. I find it hard to put down sometimes. I say that I only watch about one hour of TV a day but, I think I'm on the computer or iPad two or three times longer. I don't find myself a very good multitasker I have a hard enough time focusing on one thing. I seem to tune out when I am trying to multitask.
I think it is very possible to be addicted to digital media. With gaming, people can be addicted with the fantasy of it, it's a form of escape from reality, with some that escape is multiple times per day. In this generation we have to always be in the know, what is going every second of the day. Our form of communication is no longer face to face but now is digital like, texting, facebook and even emails. For me there are some benefits to digital media, for example I have relatives that live out of state, I lake to use facebook to converse with them and show them photos of my daughter so they can catch up on what is going on in our lives. I guess I need to learn how to live with this, It's not going away any time soon.
I think that you did a good job pointing out the negative and positives of digital media. You made a good point about how video gamers use video games to replace reality, i think that is a huge reason why people get addicted to it. I myself am a huge multi tasker, sometimes i have a few different things on at the same time, a lot of time i have the tv on just for noise and im not even paying attention to it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that multitasking takes away from the quality of interaction. No one person can multitask and still acquire the information load as if they were focusing on that one subject. Important or relevant information could be lost when multitasking. You have also made a lot of good points in that a transition to digital communication is not going to be easy. Face-to-face communication time is seen as the good to accurate interaction between people. If it is lost many people who have not yet obtained these communication skills may never obtain them. I believe that this in turn could have dramatic effects on modern society. In the end I do not think face-to-face communication will disappear but the less and less of it we see will show some sort of negative effects.
ReplyDeleteI like what you said about multitasking, it is harder and harder to just be focusing on one thing at a time now a days. For digital natives it is more familiar. Video games also do offer an escape from the real world. In an alternate reality there are mostly no responsibilites and no consequences it's just a way to relax. Most people are starting live more in their virtual world than in reality , and that is where the subject of video game addiction comes from I think. The need for 24/7 technology is coming with pros and cons, I tihnk as long as people always understand what the separtion is between virtual reality and actual reality then maybe this kind of addiction will dwindle away.
